FORMATION developed a comprehensive wayfinding and environmental graphics system for Driscoll Children’s Hospital. The project involved research into existing wayfinding challenges as well as institutional and the regiona culture of South Texas. This knowledge informed a refreshed naming system for buildings and parking lots, a reworked signage program that integrates with playful environmental graphics programs, and corresponding printed materials that enhance both patient and operational experience.
The key elements of the signage family draws from the use of a pegboard system, allowing for flexible updates to signage and contributing to its longevity. Each informational plaque can be attached/detached separately and assembled according to our modular standards. The exterior signage system continues this language.
The environmental graphics program are located on key node areas such as elevator lobbies and corridor intersections that create a strong sense of place. Each level receives a unique color scheme, with patterning inspired by traditional and regional textile patterns that uplift the mood of the space, and reinforce wayfinding.
